POTD!!!

We’ve been in home improvement mode for the past several weeks due to arrival of several out of town guests this weekend. Actually, Todd has been in home improvement mode as I have been getting home too late to be of any use. He’s done a great job getting everything sorted, fixed, scheduled, and installed. Thanks hon.
Originally we had grand plans for fixing up the backyard. We were going to tackle it ourselves. In our vision there were agave plants, rock rivers, fire pits and a small petting zoo. Due to HOA restrictions however, the petting zoo idea was 86ed. Due to our horrendous work schedules so were the agave plants, rock rivers, and fire pits. We ended up having a small patio built (and new stairs!) by a man named Martin and replacing the dead, dead, dead grass with new sod. It was well worth it as our yard actually looks inviting now. Just to give you an idea on how it looked before picture this: An outdoor rock/metal concert has just finished and the thousands of fans that were in the mosh-pit have left. A strong rain sweeps the field. The grass is trampled, muddy, and makes a slightly horror movie squishing sound when you walk on it. That was our backyard.
On a geek-out note. I just gifted myself the newest Totally Rad Actions; TRA2: The Revenge. I played around with a few of them on these shots and so far I really appreciate my present to myself.

Just practicing with my macro lens.

When I was smaller than I am now I remember playing with a box of rocks my family had. The memories are very fuzzy at the edges and I could only remember one specific rock. It was small, pinkish and glued to the head of a nail. I started talking with my dad about that rock and he sent me on a search mission to find the box of rocks that might contain the nail rock. I found a large wooden box and several bags of rocks, stones, geodes, etc. My dad and I started cleaning some of the rocks and holding them up to the light to appreciate their true beauty. At first glance the stones were kind of boring, a bit dull, and lifeless but once held up to the light they revealed a rainbow of colors, patterns, shapes, and textures. Eventually I found the small pink rock I was looking for (though I have yet to photograph it) and it was just as I remembered.

These are actually the old stairs. Lying in our yard. Just sittin’ there. In our yard.

Sunday marked my last day at the Gypsy Market. They are tearing down that area and building some fancy shopping complex in its place. Unfortunately I can’t make the final few weekends due to other commitments. Commitments like; work, friends, family, KC, sanity, happiness…
In all seriousness it was a good thing for me to do. It was hard and tiring but ultimately rewarding. I spoke to so many people and it was a great chance to get my work out there instead of hiding it away on the internet. I also have developed a new found respect for those vendors that do this for a living. It is not an easy job but these people do it every week. Next time you go to a market with vendors selling their wares take some time to say hello and find out a little bit about what they do.
Here’s to all the artists! Cheers!

Though I will never get tired of shooting the sunsets. I have officially gotten tired of shooting the sunsets over Lake Travis. There, I said it.

Todd has been wanting to do some nice landscaping to our backyard as it is currently a sodden wasteland of dead grass. When we had the front yard bedecked with a sprinkler system we decided not to do the backyard. No one ever sees it, it doesn’t get used except by KC, and we were trying to save some money. In hindsight we should have just done the whole yard. When grass becomes physically painful to walk on you know there is a problem.
We headed to a nearby office complex that had a very nicely landscaped common area. Since neither of us are very good with sustaining nature or creating habitats for it we wanted to get some inspiration. What we realized is that we should just stick to grass for now. Plants are expensive and edible.

This was supposed to be a short time-lapse film of the clouds floating by. The wind was pushing them at an amazing speed that it looked like someone had pressed the fast forward button (or advance button as it is called now). In my head the movie was graceful and relaxing. In reality I can’t hold a camera very steady.

At the end of a long day all I wanted was to just crawl into bed and read. Instead I met Todd at Brooklyn Heights Pizzeria and partook in a lemon-drop shot. Then I went home and crawled into bed.
